The Warré Way
At Boglands Bees, we follow the Warré method of beekeeping — a traditional approach that closely mimics the natural homes of bees in tree cavities.
Warré hives are simple, vertical structures that allow the bees to build their own natural comb downward from top bars. This foundationless method supports better bee health and allows the colony to create cell sizes that suit them.
We add space to the hives from below through a technique called nadiring. This respects the bees’ natural instinct to expand their nest downward and helps maintain the natural order of the colony, with brood below and honey above.
Our hives are built from rough-sawn local spruce. They are practical and rustic, designed for function rather than appearance. A quilt box filled with insulating material sits above the colony to help regulate moisture and temperature.
We believe that the best beekeeping involves careful observation rather than frequent intervention. By disturbing the bees as little as possible, we allow them to maintain their natural nest scent, temperature, and social structure.
This gentle, respectful way of working is at the core of everything we do at Boglands Bees.
